What the drive is actually like
You start in the Sarajevo basin and drop along the Neretva — Konjic, then Jablanica, then the canyon opening out towards Herzegovina. For the passenger it is a descent: you leave at 500 metres and arrive at 60, with the climate changing on the way. About 130 km, two to two and a half hours.
As a longer fixed ride, agree the fare and any stops (Konjic, Jablanica) up front. The train through the canyon is cheap and especially scenic - check departures on redvoznje.ba.
What specifically goes wrong on this route
Because you are leaving from Sarajevo you have an option the other direction does not: the train runs through the same canyon, cheap, and taken as much for the view as for the transport. If you do take a car, agree any stops up front — Konjic and Jablanica are on the way and half an hour costs little, but arranged in advance it costs less than improvised en route.
