Ilidža is the closest suburb to the airport — a few kilometres, mostly flat, without entering city traffic. That is precisely why many travellers book accommodation here: the transfer stays short and predictable even when the rest of the valley is jammed.
Because it's so short, insist on the meter - a flat 'airport' fare for a couple of kilometres makes no sense. A tram also links Ilidža to central Sarajevo, a cheap option if you're not loaded with bags.

Because the ride is so short, the gap between the meter and a "fixed price" is at its most obvious here — the flat figure offered at arrivals is often the same one quoted for the city centre, for a ride several times shorter. Ilidža is also the terminus of the tram into town, so if you are not in a hurry and not heavily laden, you can continue from here by tram.
