Getting around Foca

Foča is where the Ćehotina meets the Drina in the far southeast, and it is the gateway to some of the most serious landscape in the country: Sutjeska National Park with Maglić and the Perućica primeval forest to the southeast, the Tara canyon and the Montenegrin border at Šćepan Polje to the south. The town itself is small and strung along the river.
Practically everything worth coming for is a long way outside town on roads with no public transport. The rafting camps on the Tara and the Drina are tens of kilometres out, and in summer the local driving trade is essentially built around delivering and collecting their guests. Outside the season it is very quiet, and no company here is confirmed as operating overnight.
What to sort out before you pay
Book transport in advance, including the return, with a specific time and pickup point. Phone coverage in the canyon is unreliable and arranging something on the spot generally does not work. If you are continuing into Montenegro, confirm the driver can make the crossing before you count on it.

How much is a taxi in Foca?

Can I pay by card in Foca?
Assume not. We have no company here confirmed as taking cards, and across Bosnia the cash-only car is the norm rather than the exception. Carry convertible marks (BAM) in small notes — drivers frequently cannot change a large one. Euros are sometimes accepted informally, but at a rate set by the driver, so an ATM is almost always the better deal.

Which airport should I fly into for Foca?
Bosnia has three airports with scheduled traffic — Sarajevo (SJJ), Tuzla (TZL) and Banja Luka (BNX) — and for much of the country a Croatian airport such as Split, Dubrovnik or Zagreb is the closer option.
