Pale sits on a plateau above Sarajevo at around 800 m, reached by climbing over Romanija — under 15 km as the crow flies but a proper mountain road, and a different drive in winter than in summer. The place itself is small and walkable. What defines it is next door: Jahorina, the largest ski resort in the country.
Taxi work here is therefore seasonal to an unusual degree. In winter it is dominated by runs up to the Jahorina hotels and lifts, agreed as a fixed price rather than metered, because it is a twenty-minute climb the driver returns from empty. The rest of the year it is university, Sarajevo and Romanija trips. There are few companies, so in peak season they can all be busy at once.
What to sort out before you pay
Book the mountain leg ahead, especially Saturday morning up and Sunday afternoon down, when the whole resort changes over at the same time. Ask whether waiting is included if you are a group with equipment, and what happens if you come down later than planned. In snow, the climb itself is reason enough not to leave it to chance.
