What the drive is actually like
The airport is at Butmir, on the southwestern end of the Sarajevo valley; Baščaršija is at the opposite, northeastern end. The ride runs the full length of the city — past Ilidža, Otoka and Marijin Dvor — so it is effectively a cross-section of Sarajevo in about twenty minutes. Outside peak hours it is quick; in the morning and around five in the afternoon the same stretch can take twice as long.
This is the ride visitors most often overpay. Take a car from the official rank, ask for the meter, and if you land late, confirm a rough price first. The Moj Taxi app works in Sarajevo and is usually cheaper than grabbing a car waiting at the door.
What specifically goes wrong on this route
This is the single most overpaid ride in the country. A car waiting outside arrivals will often offer a "fixed price to the centre" instead of the meter, and that figure can be a multiple of the real one. Ask for the meter, or know the bracket before you get in. Second thing: Baščaršija is pedestrianised, so you are dropped at the edge of the cobbles — give the name of your accommodation rather than "Baščaršija", or you may end up on the wrong side of the old town with your bags.
