What the drive is actually like
In this direction you are climbing: out of the Herzegovinian lowland up the Neretva towards the basin, through Jablanica and Konjic, about 130 km in two to two and a half hours. In winter the contrast is real — rain in Mostar can be snow at Bradina.
If you're flying out of Sarajevo, ask the driver to take you straight to the airport (Butmir) rather than the centre - it saves a change. Cheaper: the train or bus through the same canyon.
What specifically goes wrong on this route
The thing that differs most from the opposite direction is the destination: if you are flying out of Sarajevo, tell the driver you are going to the airport at Butmir, not the centre. Butmir is at the far end of the valley from Baščaršija, and going into town and back out again is half an hour and an extra cost that need not have existed. Settle it when you book, not in the car.
