Visoko is about 30 km northwest of Sarajevo in the Bosna valley, on the motorway and the railway, which makes it an easy half-day trip from the capital. Historically it was the centre of the medieval Bosnian state and later a leather-working town; internationally it is known for the disputed pyramid hills and the Ravne tunnels, which bring a steady year-round trickle of visitors.
The centre is small and walkable, but the sites are not in it. The pyramid hills and the tunnel entrances are scattered around the surrounding slopes, several kilometres apart, and no bus usefully connects them. That is why a town of this size supports more taxi companies than its neighbours — a fixed-price car with waiting, or an organised tour, is how people actually get round the sites.
What to sort out before you pay
Treat the sites as one booking rather than several: agree a total that covers the hills, the tunnels and the waiting between them, and confirm how long you get at each. Coming from Sarajevo, the train and bus are both cheap and frequent, so paying for a car for the whole journey rarely makes sense unless there are several of you.
