Taxi from Sarajevo International Airport

Sarajevo International sits in Butmir, on the south-western edge of the city below Mount Igman. It is about 12 km to Baščaršija and the old centre, and only six to Ilidža. This is the busiest airport in the country and, for most visitors, the first taxi ride they take in Bosnia — which is precisely why it is where overcharging most often happens.

What is waiting outside arrivals

Cars wait directly outside the arrivals exit. Neither the tram nor the trolleybus reaches the airport — the nearest tram terminus is at Ilidža, a few kilometres away — so with luggage a taxi is realistically the only sensible option unless you have a transfer booked. The terminal is small: there is one exit, and the cars are right outside it.

Where people overpay

The classic move is an offer of a "fixed" price into town with no meter, at several times the real fare. The airport-to-Baščaršija run is about 12 km and under the Sarajevo tariff it is an ordinary metered city ride. Ask for the meter. If the driver refuses, take the next car — there is no shortage of them.

Travelling on

Sarajevo is also the jumping-off point for further travel: Jahorina and Bjelašnica in winter (mountain runs at a fixed price, not metered), Mostar and Herzegovina in summer. If your final stop is outside Sarajevo, say so when you book — heading south straight from the airport is shorter and cheaper than going into town and back out. And East Sarajevo is actually closer to the airport than the old centre is, which few arrivals realise.
