Sarajevo Airport to the centre: taxi, bus & transfer 2026
Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ), out at Butmir, sits about 12 km from the old town (Baščaršija) and only ~6 km from the suburb of Ilidža. It’s a short, cheap trip — but it’s also the single most common place visitors overpay. Here are all the ways into town, cheapest first.

Metered taxi (the easy choice)
A taxi straight from the rank to the centre on the meter is normally 20–30 KM. That’s the fair range; a flat rank price can reach around 40 KM, and anything well above that — especially with no meter running — is an overcharge. Insist the meter goes on before you set off. The airport bus (cheapest direct option)
Centrotrans runs an airport bus to the city for around 5 KM, timed roughly to flights. It’s the budget pick if you’re travelling light and your arrival isn’t in the middle of the night. Buy the ticket from the driver; pay in marks.
The Ilidža tram hack
Ilidža is only ~6 km from the airport, and Sarajevo’s tram line #3 runs from there all the way to Baščaršija for a single ~1.80 KM ticket. A short taxi to Ilidža plus the tram can be the cheapest way of all into the centre, and it’s a fun ride along the valley. Best if you’re not weighed down with luggage. Sarajevo Airport → Ilidža.
Pre-booked private transfer
For groups, lots of luggage, or a late landing, a pre-booked transfer is worth the premium — a fixed price, a driver waiting with your name, no haggling at arrivals. Paying and avoiding the overcharge
- Carry cash in KM. Cards aren’t guaranteed in taxis; if you pay euros, the rate is fixed at 1 € = 1.95583 KM.
- Ask for the meter for the metered option, or agree the total for a flat/pre-booked ride — before you get in.
- There’s no Uber or Bolt anywhere in Bosnia. The local app is Moj Taxi, but it often fails for foreigners, so keep a dispatch number as backup.
Once you’re in town
